Dr Richard Hanly

Dr Richard Hanly is an Orthopaedic Surgeon who specialises in reconstructive surgery of the lower limb.

Dr Hanly commenced in Private Practice in 2017. He currently has a dual public appointment as the Orthopaedic Director of Training at The Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and visiting specialist at The Prince Charles Hospital. Educated in Brisbane, Dr Hanly received his Medical Degree in 2006 from the University of Queensland. He completed his Orthopaedic training in Queensland and was admitted as a Fellow to the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in February 2015.

Dr Hanly spent 12 months in the Exeter Hip Unit of the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre working under the team of leading hip surgeons; Mr John Timperley, Mr Matthew Hubble, Mr Jonathon Howell and Mr Matthew Wilson. He gained experience in complex primary and revision hip reconstruction and arthroplasty. Dr Hanly has completed training required to offer MAKO Robotic Assisted joint replacement surgery. Subsequently he worked under Mr Ian Winson and Mr Steve Hepple in the Foot & Ankle Unit of the Avon Orthopaedic Centre in Southmead Hospital. The expert unit in Bristol has a strong focus in reconstructive procedures and arthroscopic techniques in foot and ankle surgery.

Dr Hanly is a Senior Lecturer with the University of Queensland, School of Medicine. He is a Member of the Arthroplasty Society of Australia and a Fellow of the Australian Orthopaedic Association.

hip replacement

Hip replacement is the most successful surgical procedure in Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr Hanly performs primary and revision hip joint replacement surgery. He has a keen interest in complex primary reconstruction. Dr Hanly utilises muscle sparing approaches to hip replacement and is involved in the Robotic Surgery Program offered through the Wesley Hospital.


foot & ankle sports injury

The biomechanics of the foot and ankle are complex. Dr Hanly has a keen interest in management of injuries of the foot and ankle associated with trauma, overuse, or due to neuropathy. He engages a multi-disciplinary approach to treatment and rehabilitation of your injury.


knee replacement

Increasingly, knee arthritis is affecting the quality of life of ageing Australians. Dr Hanly has a strong focus on achieving optimal knee kinematics in knee replacement. Partial replacement and total knee replacement are performed using computer navigation or robotic assisted techniques.
 


lower limb trauma

Dr Hanly provides on-call services through the Wesley Emergency Centre, RBWH and TPCH. The RBWH is one of two Tertiary Trauma Centres in Brisbane and TPCH has the largest specialist Neck of Femur Unit which has been the bench-marking institution since its opening in 2010. Referrals can be made emergently from Emergency Department or GP Clinic via Wesley Hospital Switchboard. Referral for expedited review of ambulatory trauma can be made via referrals@llcb.com.au


ankle arthritis

Ankle arthritis can result from primary degeneration of cartilage, or as a result of injury or other inflammatory conditions. If you have not had relief from non-operative treatments, Dr Hanly can discuss you options using techniques including realignment osteotomy, arthroscopy, ankle fusion, and ankle replacement.
